Getnthruit needs a tech makeover because…

I am hoping that if I were to win, new technology could enable me to connect easier to the outside world. My family is in New York and I am in South Carolina so I miss important events.

My technological/biological/personal, etc. world changed on Jan 7th 2004 when I was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. Before that, I would say I was fairly computer savvy, career oriented and thought I had my fingers on the pulse of what was current.

Since then it’s been a roller coaster of chemo therapy, physical therapy and super strong pain medications. Suffice to say technology in our home has taken a back seat to my medical care.

A portable DVD player has been my saving grace thru chemo because I can put in a movie to take me to another place as they access my port and give me IV injections for 3 -4 hours. Over the years it (the DVD player) has gotten pretty beat up, a new one of those would be awesome.

We live in a rural area so dial up has been my only option for internet. I say that, I haven’t checked lately because it takes me so long to boot up the computer, when I do get on line I end up doing other things. My normal connection is 28222bps. If I am having a good day it can get up to 34,600 and a great day would get me around 42,000. Twice I have gotten a virus which knocked out everything including all of my contacts in Outlook. I now have a hard copy somewhere around here. I do have Norton – actually last year we had 2 subscriptions – I could not access the support page or the online chat and I used way too many cell phone minutes trying to cancel.

It would be helpful to go to the Breast Cancer support web pages. I’ve also heard about “blogs” but that’s way too far out there… I just keep a journal.

It would be great to have a laptop with wireless connection for my really bad days when sitting at my desk for any length of time is just not an option. I could go anywhere.

Your application form asks for “tags”, images” & a “You tube URL”; but I don’t know what a tag is so I don’t think I have one, and I probably shouldn’t admit it but I may be the only person in the world who has not been to You Tube. My connectivity is too slow to see the video’s.

These past few weeks my father has been hospitalized. My father is extremely sick. My brother recently had a son who I have not yet seen. My first nephew. I cannot believe I have not seen my Dad hold his first grandson. Today as I write this I realize several things; but one is that there is technology out there that could put some kind of camera on their computer & mine so I would not miss so many of these moments.

Thanking you in advance for your consideration,

All of my best wishes to you for a successful and speedy recovery. Sounds like you need a laptop computer, plus a camera, plus a satellite modem with a year’s worth of connectivity to get you through this entire journey.

Feel free to reach out to me if you need someone to email with.

Christine I wish you all of the best with this contest and would normally have given you my vote but I voted for Aunt Bea because she has a rotary phone I mean who still has a rotary phone she really needs an upgrade maybe she can convert some of her 8 tracks to cd with the laptop.

I’M Kidding I voted for you and will spread the word and try to get as many people to vote for you as possible. You have some catching up to do that almost broadway cat has 200 more votes than you. I hope you keep up the fight against Cancer Champ and hope to talk to you in the near future say hello to Dan. Love Scott Kelly junrseau@verizon.net

Good Luck Christine! Fighting any form of illness is tough physically and mentally draining. We have had to watch my stepfather go through several surgeries and actually to do this day he has no nose; just a big hole on the front of his face where it used to be. It is especially hard financially on patients & their families. Please email me your address. We are very much a “techy” family that may have a handful of items you could use that are extras to us but could be of help to you. Such as the cameras.

Best wishes for a successful recovery and I hope you do win this.
