Larry Volpe needs a tech makeover because…

The public school system is dismally under funded and profoundly inequitable, especially in regards to students’ access to technology…some school districts have a laptop for each student while our school plays catch-up in our computer lab on an ongoing basis, never to catch up.

In my class I have a donated desktop that is just too slow to look something up during a teachable moment. Even starting the computer up in the morning to take attendance takes time away from my daily planning activities. A three year old printer we use is a dinosaur in the age of tech advances. And the CRT is just way too big for a classroom and a pain to keep clean. I would include an image of what our classroom has now for technology, but the dismally slow speed of our system won’t allow me to upload a digital photo.

With new technology my students can conduct research with reasonable speed and print documents that are comparable to what their affluent counterparts have. We can print photos of our weekend adventures, school sports and gardening activities. I can take attendance in the morning without having to spend several minutes staring at the computer waiting for it to be ready. I can click on an icon and see it within a few seconds…unheard of in my classroom forever. My students can access learning games, and CD’s that will improve reading skills. They can become familiar with technology and how valuable an asset it can be…most of my students have no computers in their homes.

Thank you!

I have worked with Mr. Volpe and seen first hand the professionalism and dedication he puts into his work as an educator. The school he teaches in is located in a lower income area of San Jose and is drastically under-served. Please consider his program to receive the basic technology that is needed to educate our youth in the heart of the silicon valley.

Larry is extremely dedicated to give his students students and routinely gives up his own time outside the class room to help them succeed. I know first hand the age of the equipment in the classroom and it is definitely in need of an upgrade.

  • Amanda Fellows  |  October 8th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Let his program receive the tech makeover.

  • Lillian McMath  |  October 8th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

He is fabulously dedicated to his kids!! He needs all the help he can get!

Larry is an extremely dedicated teacher and cares about giving the best education to his students. He routinely reaches out to his student’s parents on weekends to allow them to go on outdoor wilderness trips.

I work at the same school, and I agree with the fact that technology is not something we can be proud of. These students would really benefit from this grant.(maybe INTEL has a couple extra computers for my Kindergarten class too)

  • Debra Purvis  |  October 8th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Larry works hard for his class and school. He deserves it! I worked with Larry for over 10 years and he is a very dedicated teacher.

  • Gregory Voelker  |  October 8th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Larry and I both work together at the same elementary school. He is an incredible guy and can definately use a new computer for his classroom. He is very dedicated and passionate as an educator. Larry certainly deserves a “yes” vote for a computer classroom makeover.

  • Karen Morliengo  |  October 8th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Larry is an incredbly creative and dedicated teacher. What he can do with this tech makeover will reach far beyond his classroom and touch the lives of so many others.

  • Inma Gomez  |  October 9th, 2008 at 12:35 am

Noone deserves it more than Larry. An extremely dedicated professional. Totally devoted to the students.

  • David Michael De La Torre  |  October 9th, 2008 at 12:39 am

I have know Mr. Larry Volpe as both a friend and colleague. Last year Larry served as a veteran fifth grade teacher that I was able to collaborate with- in turn, I know firsthand that he teaches California Content Standards in a timely manner. Certainly, faster computers will allow students to utilize instructional minutes even more efficiently.

Please note that Mr. Larry Volpe is regarded as an “exemplary teacher by professionals associated with FMSD including my former coach.

I’ve worked with Larry for many years and have seen how dedicated he is to his students and to the school we teach at. He definitely deserves this tech makeover. The upgraded equipment will be a plus to his teaching and can only help the students be better prepared for their future. All classrooms need the computers, etc. to teach with, but Larry should receive the makeover because he WILL use everything!

  • Roser Sauleda  |  October 9th, 2008 at 3:47 am

Mr Volpe, I hope you get it. For you and your students.

  • George Sanchez  |  October 9th, 2008 at 10:02 am

  • George Sanchez  |  October 9th, 2008 at 10:08 am

I have known Larry for several years and know that he is an excellent teacher who does a great job with students in the classroom. Larry and his students would definitely benefit from this tech makeover since the majority of his students don’t have access to computers in the home.

  • Greg DeBrino  |  October 9th, 2008 at 10:33 am

Larry is so very selfless that he dedicates just about all his extra time to his students, new and past.
Giving his classroom a tech-job would allow him to continue to stay in contact with everyone he has touched and keep his current students in the main stream of information.
This is one teacher that definately goes above and beyond!

  • Dominic Tate  |  October 9th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

I attended his school and was a student of Mr. Volpe. He is a GREAT teacher with out the technology, but the students would be on more level playing field trying to learn using updated technology like most school can already afford.

  • amparo robles  |  October 9th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Mr. Volpe is an exelent teacher, and he is totally devoted to his students.

  • Laurel  |  October 9th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Larry’s dedication to students goes beyond the classroom. I work with Larry as part of Inner City Outings, and I get to see how Larry motivates his kids with school gardens, hikes and campouts, community service (e.g. trash pickup), and an appreciation for wonders great and small. All teachers deserve access to technology, but Larry goes a step further by inspiring a next generation of leaders and academics. I expect there will be a movie about him someday.

  • Linda I. Rogers  |  October 9th, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Larry will make the best of this like he does with everything he utilizes for his students. If I could nominate a TEACHER OF THE WORLD, he’d be it.

  • jeff richardson  |  October 9th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Larry is a masterful teacher and thoughtful on how to get the most out of every $ he gets, so i know this is a great investment for the students in his classes.

  • Edna Wong  |  October 9th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Larry is a rare gem! I have worked across from Larry for over 15 years. The comments from his friends, parents, coworkers are all comments that are true. Larry shares his passion of photography(these realia enhances his teaching), nature, gardening, computers, and journal writing with the students, community, and staff at Seven Trees School. I often see him working with his kids on his outdated snail pace computers. It would be a big plus to share this wonderful technology makeover with his after school G.A.T.E., ELD/EO students, intervention program, staff, parents, and his outstanding student weekend activities. He believes his students deserves the best. Our districts and schools mission is to prepare the kids to become life long learners. Larry knows how to guide his students in that direction. He is deserving of the technology makeover. You won’t go wrong in with your choice of selecting Larry Volpe!

  • Robert Schol  |  October 9th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Larry is an inspiration to adults and kids alike. He knows how to get the best out of everyone and get the whole group involved. He’s a super star :) and deserves the support for all he does and aspires to do …

  • Veronica Hill  |  October 9th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Mr. Volpe is one of the most dedicated teachers I have had the pleasure of meeting. He doesn’t give up on any of his students, he greets every family member by their first names and shows true interest. He is not only recognized in our home as a teacher but a friend as well. Even when his students move on to Junior High and High School you will find Mr. Volpe at their football games cheering on his students. Job well done!!!!!!

  • R. Martinez  |  October 10th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Larry is very deserving of this makeover, he gives so much to our students and the community in which we serve, it will be great when he wins.

  • John Lindner  |  October 10th, 2008 at 1:41 am

Larry is a hard-working, dedicated teacher, always looking for innovative ways to share the world with his students.

  • Gloria Chen  |  October 10th, 2008 at 1:49 am

I know Larry from the same organization we volunteer at, San Jose Inner City Outings. He is the teacher you wish all students have. He routinely devotes his own time for his students welfare, in school and out of school. Any tools that will help him focus more time on his students will greatly further his outreach.

  • Paul Querns  |  October 10th, 2008 at 5:42 am

I have known Mr. Volpe since we were teenager’s. I feel, that he has become the most productive adult, from our “old neighborhood”. He has decided to devote his time and all his energy to help inner-city youth’s. There is no price for such devotion, only gratitude for the service that he has provided to the community. Please help him to further “his” children’s education and vote for Larry.

  • Robert Marusich  |  October 10th, 2008 at 5:50 am

During the time that Larry and I were colleagues, I saw first-hand the devotion he had to teaching his students and making sure that they had the best educational experiences possible. I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving of this award.

  • Mary Fries  |  October 10th, 2008 at 10:25 am

Larry’s children will benefit enormously from a tech makeover. His dedication, enthusiasm, and teaching talent make him a real asset to our profession.

I’m was one of Mr. Volpe students and I know that Mr. Volpe is always interest on what is best for he’s students. Mr.Volpe deserves this very much not only him but, also his students.

  • Nina Zaveri  |  October 10th, 2008 at 11:19 am

Larry Volpe is a very dedicated 5th grade teacher, in a school that is in a low income neighborhood. While Larry donates generously of his own time, resources and a tremendous amount of energy into educating his kids, he is limited in what he can do, due to not having updated computers/technology. I know he is always trying to get grants/donations in order to teach his kids native plant gardening, nature conservation, outdoor activities and tie all of this into a rounded academic education. Larry deserves this award fully, as do his kids the opportunity to learn more and grow into future leaders of our country.

  • Bill Smith  |  October 10th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Larry gives everything he has to his students. They will get a great return on every penny you invest in Larry’s classroom.

  • Santosh Pappachan  |  October 10th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

I know Larry through San Jose ICO and he is one teacher who is extremely dedicated and passionate about his work.

  • mari  |  October 10th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Larry is a keen teacher that wants the best for his students. What better way to support a dedicated teacher than to upgrade his classroom technology so that his students will be ready and prepared for their future.

  • Jessica Bui  |  October 10th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

I am one of Mr. Volpe’s former students and so was my older sister and my little brother. Mr Volpe is a great teacher and he gives so much to his classroom and his students. He tries his best to make his class a great environment for learning and i think he should get this opportunity to upgrade his classroom technology. (=

  • Shabbir Latif  |  October 10th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I have known Larry for over 8yrs. He is extremely dedicated and treats his students like his own kids. He gives the kids not just academic education but also experiential by taking them outdoors–kayaking, skiing, camping, science camp.

I enthusiastically cast my vote for Larry Volpe, because countless individuals will benefit if he is awarded this grant. He demonstrates repeatedly his commitment to youngsters in providing both academic and “on the ground” education.

  • Aida De La Torre  |  October 10th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Mr. Volpe is one of a few teachers that I have met that has made home visits to each and every one of his students. He takes that extra step, time and effort to develope a well round student. Mr. Volpe and his students definitely deserve the make over.

  • Michelle Rose  |  October 10th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Larry deserves the tchnology upgrade in his classroom. This will be another way to enhance the education of not only his fifth grade classroom but all who are in contact with them.

  • Louise  |  October 10th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Mr. Volpe provides unique, hands on activities for his students and their families. Larry also continues to support these students beyond the classroom throughout their educational yrs. Without a local public library, your technology donation is even more critical to this community of struggling families. Please consider upgrading this classroom!

  • Richard Algea  |  October 10th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

I have known Larry for our entire teaching career. He is by far one of the most dedicated teachers I work with. I am always very glad when my 2nd and 3rd grade students end up in his class because I know that they will cared for and exposed to many new and exciting life experiences.

  • Maria Volpe  |  October 10th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Larry is an inspirational teacher. He uses technology to engage and motivate his students into becoming lifelong learners. His class creates power point presentations, retelling their amazing adventures in the great outdoors or memorable learning experiences within the walls of their classroom. I hope his passion for teaching will be rewarded with this opportunity.

  • Patrick Walsh  |  October 10th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

    See Jessica Bui’s testimonial….
Larry is a teacher that students/ adults/decision makers/consumers/parents and teachers of the future will remember and be guided by.
An upgrade will ensure that the students that Larry influences are better prepared and can maintain the pace that is needed to be a top perfomer into the future.

I think that the passion that Larry puts into his teaching everyday is enought to say that anything he is able to use, he uses it to the advantage of the students. Wouldn’t it be nice to give him a makeover that helps reach his students at a much more advanced rate? I know he would use it well…

  • Jamie Fletcher  |  October 12th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Mr. Volpe is a truly dedicated teacher and awesome human being. He is an inspiration to all who meet him. Please give him and all the future decision makers he will influence a tech make-over.

On of the most concern teachers I have met.

  • Joe Rodriguez  |  October 15th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

As I said in my newspaper column, Larry Volpe is one of those rare teachers whose students will remember him for all of their lives.

  • Marcy Boyles  |  October 20th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Larry is one of the most inspirational teachers I have known. He gives thousands of dollars of his own money to help his needy students as we teach in a low socio economic district. No one deserves this more as his students will directly benefit on a daily basis. He will probably integrate things his students learn from going camping, biking, kayaking with him and his group. Wish more teachers were like Larry.

  • Jennifer Wilhoit  |  November 7th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

I met Mr. Volpe today, and was impressed with the caring and dedication to students. He obviously cares for the students and covers a wide range of topics. Please grant him anything that could make tis extraordinary teacher may need.
